From 1st February 2026, under updated legislation, doctors may be able to issue longer-term prescriptions for some patients who have well-managed and stable health conditions. In some cases, if clinically appropriate, prescriptions may cover a period of 6 months and up to 12 months.

Pharmacies will still only dispense up to three months’ medication at a time (or less for certain medications). Not all medications are included. Controlled drugs, including some pain relief and ADHD treatments, follow existing rules.

Please note: Patients who receive an extended prescription cannot order repeats over the phone, portal, or by email. Repeats must be arranged during a face-to-face medication review with your GP. Booking in advance is essential, as we cannot send an extended prescription to the pharmacy without this review. This medication review appointment will be for just this purpose and no other consult will be done during this appointment.

Whether a longer prescription is appropriate depends on your individual circumstances and must be clinically appropriate. Your doctor will advise if this option is suitable for you. To discuss eligibility for extended prescriptions, you must have a medication review with your own GP.
